The Alumni Committee was formed in Spring 2020 and works to increase avenues for alumni to engage with SERC staff and SERC programs. In addition to advising current SERC Staff, the Alumni Committee organizes Alumni events for graduates of UC Berkeley in the environmental field.

Gary consults clients on sustainability issues, focusing on energy and carbon strategies. He studied Environmental Science at UC Berkeley, where he explored several career trajectories and ultimately decided to focus on energy issues. He eventually completed a Masters in Environmental Management and Engineering Program at Duke University, and had since worked on various projects with S&P 500 clients throughout his various roles. He enjoys finding creative solutions to tackle complex challenges in an increasingly interconnected world and engaging people from different backgrounds. Gary currently resides in Seattle, Washington, where he likes to spend his time hiking and kayaking in recreational areas of the Northwest.Gary Gao (he/him)

Kevin graduated in 2017 with a B.S. in Environmental Sciences and minors in Geography and Energy & Resources. While attending UC Berkeley he was a Staff Associate and then Project Coordinator at Cal Zero Waste, where he worked closely with SERC to perform waste audits, coordinate reuse events, and expand the university’s composting program. After graduating Kevin joined Recology as an intern before being hired in his current role as an Environmental Program Specialist. Based out of the corporate office, he helps ensure that Recology’s operations comply with all pertinent environmental regulations. Kevin’s main area of technical expertise is in industrial stormwater compliance. In the field he helps collect samples, perform inspections, and implement BMPs. At the corporate level he reviews stormwater documents and evaluates risks based on exceedance trends and the regulatory landscape. Louis Spanias (Society and Environment ’14) served as the Internal Director for SERC in 2013-14, and is serving the SERC Alumni Committee for the second consecutive year. After graduating from Cal, Louis earned a master’s degree in Nature, Society, and Environmental Policy from the University of Oxford in 2015. Starting in 2016, Louis served as Harvey Mudd College’s Sustainability Program Manager, building out the College’s sustainability program and spearheading environmental projects and initiatives across campus. As of 2019, Louis has worked as an energy and sustainability consultant for Cumming Group in downtown Los Angeles, where he manages programs and projects for various public agency and municipal clients. Louis’ work cut across the areas of climate action, renewable energy, alternative fuels, environmental commodities, EV charging and electrification, sustainability planning and reporting, and environmental policy. Steve Chan is a physicist by training, constantly thinking about the climate crisis through engineering, finance, and political lenses. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 2018 with training in PV R&D as well hands on experience installing solar on low-income households. He has worked at New Energy Equity for 3 years, focusing on end-to-end solar project financing and development. New Energy Equity is a top 10 C&I solar financier, with over 200 MW of solar successfully developed, with average 1MW project valuation ~$1MM. Over time, Steve’s responsibilities have ranged from initial site feasibility, full design and development, financial M&A, and project management. Steve also worked with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN), and helped pass the Maryland Clean Energy Jobs Act of 2019. He is passionate about climate entrepreneurship, and believes innovation will be crucial to solving the climate crisis.
